We were very pleased to welcome John Kronenberg to our May meeting.  He decided to talk about ‘Liberation Theology’ - and all members were eager to discover what this really meant.  After three quarters of an hour of talk and powerpoint presentation, we had all learned a great deal.

‘Liberation Theology’ began in the 1950s, in the poorer countries of the South American continent, where many people were now governed by military rulers, causing a great deal of hardship and poverty.  Most of these countries were mainly Roman Catholic and many of the priests lived among the poor and suffering - they felt that God favoured the poor and he was a liberator.  Archbishop Romero took a stand against the rulers and accused the soldiers of killing innocent people because they were ordered to do so.  We listened to a very inspiring speech by the Archbishop.  He was eventually put to death for his faith.

The world today is ripe for ‘Liberation Theology’ with 500 million people starving in the Third World and 1 billion living in abject poverty,  500 million with no work and 500 million illiterate.

Examples from the Bible - the Exodus of the slaves from Egypt, prophets of the Old Testament were critical of social injustice.

This only gives us a taste of John’s talk, which everyone found extremely interesting.  He was thanked by Valerie.

In July, we shall hold our annual Garden party.
