Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week and Easter

On Ash Wednesday, 5th March, there will be a service of Holy Communion with Imposition of Ashes. This will be at 11am in the Lady Chapel.

In Lent there will be no flowers in the church, as we keep this solemn season. The liturgical colour for Lent is purple. Lent lasts for 40 days marking Jesus’ 40 days in the desert (or wilderness) being tempted by the devil. Many people either give something up for Lent, offering this sacrifice to God, or take up something positive to offer to God.

We begin Holy Week on Palm Sunday, 13th April, outside the church at 10am with Palm Branches and Palm Crosses, before processing inside for a Eucharist and many voices telling the story of Jesus’ last days.

On Maundy Thursday, 17th April, at 8pm, there will a Eucharist and foot washing (optional!), when we remember Jesus’ last supper with his disciples, and the events leading up to his arrest. At the end of the service, the altar is stripped bare and we spend some time in a silent ‘watch’ in the Lady Chapel as we remember Jesus being taken away and his disciples fleeing.

At 11am on Good Friday, 18th April, we will join with Churches Together in the Dittons (CTD) in an outdoor Good Friday service at Giggs Hill Green

At 2pm on Good Friday, 18th April, there will be a reflective, said service as we remember the last hour of Jesus’ life, his death on the cross, and the dashing of his disciples’ hopes and dreams.

Easter Sunday, 20th April, is a joyful Eucharist celebration of Christ’s resurrection and we mark it with flowers, Easter Eggs – and the liturgical colour of festivals White/Gold. The service will be at 10am.

Everyone is most welcome to join us for any or all of these services.
